Chilean Earthquake

approximately 3.34am (Chilean time) on 27 February 2010, a magnitude of 8.8 earthquake has struck the coast of Maule Region of Chile. the earthquake lasted for over 3 minutes and was noted as the strongest quake ever since the Asian earthquake in 2004. it is also the strongest earthquake that affected Chile since 1960 where the earthquake was recorded as high as 9.5 in magnitude scale.

so far there has been several aftershock as high as 6.2 and after careful monitoring until 10pm, as much as 59 aftershock had occurred. because of the after shock, the tsunami warning has been issued. so far, there has been several tsunami occurred, and there were several deaths reported because of the tsunami.

more than 1.5 million people are affected by this earthquake and more than 500,000 people are homeless. it also has been reported that more than 300 people are dead and the number is growing.

in my point of view, it is very surprising that the number of deaths are much lesser given how high magnitude of the quake was. at the same time i am very thankful on how little the number of death is. also i am humble on how destructive mother nature can be and how fragile human beings are. with all the advanced technology that we have today or how far warned we are on future earthquake/tsunami/hurricane/tornado, there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop them at all. all we can do is move from its path and hope for the best that we can survive it.

to the survivors, i pray to God so that God will give them strengths and patients to go through this tough times. i also offer my condolences to anyone who lost their loved ones in the earthquake. to everyone else all over the world, let us pray for their speedy recovery either as a country or as an individual and help them move forward because together we can do it and together, we can make a difference.
